Learning Objective Assessment

  1. Develop a basic understanding of how to manipulate forms of media and technology to express interdisciplinary concepts (i.g. sound and 3D printing) .
I achieved this through working and combining different materials. I did this when I combined using the embroidery machine with our circuit unit or combining traditional arts and crafts with our I Stop Motion unit.
  1. Learn how to create and connect various concepts to produce objects for daily life use and expression.
I believe our take aways combined with our different learned technology mediums allowed me to combine different concepts and how it will affect the classroom. I have combined ideas such as coding, using Scratch, with educational instruction to expand our perception of colors and being creative with words.
  1. Study how other artists and educators are using technology and art (past and present) to create meaningful devices and interdisciplinary artworks.
I practiced this by listening in class to other classmates perspectives after an assignment, taking notes during stewardship presentations of other artists and what they created, and lastly listening to and viewing  other classmates work from previous assignments.
  1. Make connections in how technology, specifically creative technology, can be used to enhance experiential learning in education.
I practiced this especially in my take aways and reflecting after each assignment how different traditional crafts could be combined with new creative technology to provide a new and more beneficial learning experience. For example, using iStop Motion to develop reading comprehension and elaboration skills.
  1. Explore how media and technology can be used to share experiences (5 senses) with others far and near.
I really explored this idea in our sound unit and Impact 25 project where I was required to go beyond basic visual understanding. Overall the process of making is a very tactile and personal experience which brings the artist, their intent, and their medium closer.
  1. Critically reflect and present understanding on how technology affects people in individual and educational settings.
I performed this mostly in class during our discussions after each assignment, sharing experiences and how different creative technologies affect students and teachers in the classroom.
  1. Expand my understanding of old and new devices and technology to communicate and educate.
This was expressed the strongest during our earlier assignments such as scanography and digital photography. We brainstormed how old practices transferred into new practices using the internet and mixing media such as scanography with 3D printing.
  1. Explore personal meaning in the class assignment in how we view media and technology to enhance our academic and personal engagement in the world.
I expressed this in my takeaways and reflections after engaging with an assignment. I tended to be more objective in my reflections and failed to be more subjective. I feel as though I should have reflected more in my values and beliefs and how that connected to what I was learning.
  1. Learn as much  from my class, to build an interdisciplinary understanding of how creative technology can be used in art education.
I combined most of what I have learned in this class to my Cognition and Learning course and ArtSpark internship to create and use art to create the best learning environment for  student.

The Importance of SELFIEs in Art

SELFIE was a wonderful guideline to keep students reflective during the process of making art. Requiring a student to show their process is beneficial for them as well as helping others learn different routes of making. Explaining an outcome allows others, as well the individual, to  express how they overcame failures, tested materials, and their overall working process. Also, using the proper vocabulary allows the student to practice using proper terms to prepare students for professional discourse. Finding multiple possibilities expands our ability to problem solve. Also, showing perseverance increases confidence and responsibility over their work and facilitates a growth mindset.  Performing the previous components of SELFIE prevent the creator from being careless and potentially abandoning their work due to frustration. It also provides a professional foundation to begin a career or dive deeper into an interest. The SELFIE process allows others to learn from you which copies similar formats used for websites such as Pinterest and other “Do It Yourself” forums. SELFIE is a simple framework that can help any individual approach professionalism and grow as a learner and artist.

The potential of using technology as a material in the creation of art is innovative and allows new forms of artistic thought to flow. Traditional art formats will always be used as a foundation for the process of making the art, but the technology enhances it. Art has always been about the artist, not their tools. It's about how smart, efficient, and creative an artist can be with the tools they are given. Having access to new forms of technology to make art should only expand the artist's ability to make meaning, convey messages, and challenge the mind.

Scaling up: StopMotion Animation

If you ever considered a larger stop motion project for your classroom, planning is key. Maybe use one session for planning (deciding on the story and subdividing scenes) and another session for the production. Image above: "Love and Time", a stop motion project by Jesse's Video for Artists Spring class.

Maybe interesting for some of you

Assignments #8, due Nov 1, 2016, 11:59 PM

Assignment 8, due Nov 1, 11:59 PM
1) Choose from the following two options: a) Create a short stop motion animation similar to what we did in small groups in class with iStopMotion or Vine. Create a powerful digital narrative while making sure you have some fun with this. Post the outcome on your blog. Or: b) Create an animated gif using EZGif.com or the tweening (tweening, not tweeting) function in photoshop.
2) While you create your stop motion animation, document your process. Take pictures of all steps involved so you (or anybody else) can reproduce what you did in the future. Post your documentation on your blog. Add as much description as necessary.
3) Come up with a lesson plan idea for a target audience of your choice for any one of these three subject matters: photography, scanography, or stop-motion animation. Make your pick and post the outcome on your blog.
4) Share 2 takeaways from readings for our next section (section III, see below)
5) (Only applicable to 3-credit students): If you are enrolled in this course for 3 credits, address in a blog post how you plan to meet the expected additional course work.

Sounds from NASA

I wanted to share with you all the link to NASA's Audio and Ringtones page.  There are lots of cool sound bytes of missions and conversations.  It's a nice piece of archival history for the classroom, as well!

Sharing PDF step-by-step. Student Feedback

I mentioned this document in class and the handout that I had printed for you. Here it is as an electronic version. Thank you Avery for updating the step-by-step procedure how to embed a pdf into google drive and then into the blog:

After uploading the pdf into google drive, click the three dots in the upper right hand corner (or right-click on the pdf document) and select 'Share'. Copy the shareable link and open a new tab.  Paste the link in the new tab to open the pdf again (this time as it's own separate file and not just a Google Drive preview).  Now click the three dots in the upper right hand corner again.  This time there should be an option to embed.  Copy that bit of code.  Then go to your Blogger entry and switch from 'Compose' to 'HTML'.  Paste the code in there.  I changed the width to 560 to make it fit a little better in my blog format.

The World's First Cyborg Artist

This artist was born with a condition that made him unable to see color.  When he was 21 he worked with a computer scientist to install a chip and electronic eye onto the back of his head.  He now hears color, and he hears it everywhere.  He considers himself the world's first cyborg and he has founded the Cyborg Foundation.

Welcome and Outline of Course Work for Week 1

Welcome to our class blog and to working together this semester! You find the coursework in the syllabus as posted on Moodle. I will make adjustments here and there to the assignments as needed in order to be flexible to the learning that happens during the semester.

Here is a breakdown of the assignments due next Tuesday evening. Since we have explored the blog settings only in passing, we will address any issue you may have with putting up images, adjusting permissions, etc, in our next class. Have a good, first week at TC!

Richard

Assignments #1, due Sep 13, 2016, 11:59 PM

1) Create an individual blog with a first entry that introduces you and your educational background. Add a few sentences about your experience-level with new media. Post a photographic portrait of yourself in the sidebar of your blog.

2) Conduct a short research online and locate an artist who uses technology as an important part of her studio practice or teaching. Write a blog entry about his/her work and how he/she uses technology creatively (1 paragraph; include a reference image of her/his work; do not copy/paste text, use your own words to summarize).

3) Research an art institution/gallery/museum or, if you prefer, school that focuses on technologies and list the type of media they specialize in.

4) Read Douglas Rushkoff, either Chapter 1 or 2, and share two take-aways on your blog.

5) Become a digital steward for one subtopic-area of this course and select your presentation spot through our read/write-page http://piratepad.net/VDH5K0tXUP.

6) Study the syllabus and clarify with the instructor any question that you may have.

General notes: a) Your blog will serve as your visual journal throughout the semester. You will use it as an archive, as a repository for homework, and as your visual journal. Use it also to reflect your learning process and to post notes from the class. Make entries related to our topic along the way including sketches drafts, media files, links, etc. b) Give your blog posts descriptive titles that identify each assignment (1/1, 1/2, etc) so you (and others) can follow your progress throughout the semester. c) Let the instructor know how to best support you. As a community of learner, look out for each other; if you see a class mate struggling, please help if you can and bring it to the my attention. Take advantage of office hours and make appointments; it’s easy: richardjochum.youcanbookme.com. d) Feedback: Ask for specific feedback where you need it. And give each other feedback, too. I will ask you at times to do just that.
