Learning Objective Assessment

  1. Develop a basic understanding of how to manipulate forms of media and technology to express interdisciplinary concepts (i.g. sound and 3D printing) .
I achieved this through working and combining different materials. I did this when I combined using the embroidery machine with our circuit unit or combining traditional arts and crafts with our I Stop Motion unit.
  1. Learn how to create and connect various concepts to produce objects for daily life use and expression.
I believe our take aways combined with our different learned technology mediums allowed me to combine different concepts and how it will affect the classroom. I have combined ideas such as coding, using Scratch, with educational instruction to expand our perception of colors and being creative with words.
  1. Study how other artists and educators are using technology and art (past and present) to create meaningful devices and interdisciplinary artworks.
I practiced this by listening in class to other classmates perspectives after an assignment, taking notes during stewardship presentations of other artists and what they created, and lastly listening to and viewing  other classmates work from previous assignments.
  1. Make connections in how technology, specifically creative technology, can be used to enhance experiential learning in education.
I practiced this especially in my take aways and reflecting after each assignment how different traditional crafts could be combined with new creative technology to provide a new and more beneficial learning experience. For example, using iStop Motion to develop reading comprehension and elaboration skills.
  1. Explore how media and technology can be used to share experiences (5 senses) with others far and near.
I really explored this idea in our sound unit and Impact 25 project where I was required to go beyond basic visual understanding. Overall the process of making is a very tactile and personal experience which brings the artist, their intent, and their medium closer.
  1. Critically reflect and present understanding on how technology affects people in individual and educational settings.
I performed this mostly in class during our discussions after each assignment, sharing experiences and how different creative technologies affect students and teachers in the classroom.
  1. Expand my understanding of old and new devices and technology to communicate and educate.
This was expressed the strongest during our earlier assignments such as scanography and digital photography. We brainstormed how old practices transferred into new practices using the internet and mixing media such as scanography with 3D printing.
  1. Explore personal meaning in the class assignment in how we view media and technology to enhance our academic and personal engagement in the world.
I expressed this in my takeaways and reflections after engaging with an assignment. I tended to be more objective in my reflections and failed to be more subjective. I feel as though I should have reflected more in my values and beliefs and how that connected to what I was learning.
  1. Learn as much  from my class, to build an interdisciplinary understanding of how creative technology can be used in art education.
I combined most of what I have learned in this class to my Cognition and Learning course and ArtSpark internship to create and use art to create the best learning environment for  student.

The Importance of SELFIEs in Art

SELFIE was a wonderful guideline to keep students reflective during the process of making art. Requiring a student to show their process is beneficial for them as well as helping others learn different routes of making. Explaining an outcome allows others, as well the individual, to  express how they overcame failures, tested materials, and their overall working process. Also, using the proper vocabulary allows the student to practice using proper terms to prepare students for professional discourse. Finding multiple possibilities expands our ability to problem solve. Also, showing perseverance increases confidence and responsibility over their work and facilitates a growth mindset.  Performing the previous components of SELFIE prevent the creator from being careless and potentially abandoning their work due to frustration. It also provides a professional foundation to begin a career or dive deeper into an interest. The SELFIE process allows others to learn from you which copies similar formats used for websites such as Pinterest and other “Do It Yourself” forums. SELFIE is a simple framework that can help any individual approach professionalism and grow as a learner and artist.

The potential of using technology as a material in the creation of art is innovative and allows new forms of artistic thought to flow. Traditional art formats will always be used as a foundation for the process of making the art, but the technology enhances it. Art has always been about the artist, not their tools. It's about how smart, efficient, and creative an artist can be with the tools they are given. Having access to new forms of technology to make art should only expand the artist's ability to make meaning, convey messages, and challenge the mind.
